Published in 1925, this is an absolute gem of a book. From the author's preface: In the following chapters I have tried, by quoting lawsuits of all kinds, and explaining the means employed to dispose of them, to show first the conditions under which the Bedouin live, and secondly their mentality and point of view. Although the reader may possibly gather from the pages that follow that I have a real affection for the Bedou himself and admiration for most of his laws and customs, I have tried to represent his character in full, with all his faults and failings. Descriptions of particular cases have been purposely introduced, showing unmistakably that Bedouin Law is no more infallible than any other law, and that in some cases justice is not done. But in the aggregate, it will be found that the Bedou with all his faults is a very loveable person, and his code of laws and customs is remarkable for its practical common sense.

This is an analysis of dispute resolution among Bedouin and rural Arabs in Israel. The author confronts his own involvement in the process as public administrator, anthropologist, and friend of the disputants. Traditional conflict resolution by groups of kinsmen sometimes involved bloodshed and often required payment of blood money; it was less concerned with some abstract conception of "justice" than restoration of "honor" and the reestablishment of some stable status quo between the involved groups.

First published in 1986, Lila Abu-Lughod’s Veiled Sentiments has become a classic ethnography in the field of anthropology. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Abu-Lughod lived with a community of Bedouins in the Western Desert of Egypt for nearly two years, studying gender relations, morality, and the oral lyric poetry through which women and young men express personal feelings. The poems are haunting, the evocation of emotional life vivid. But Abu-Lughod’s analysis also reveals how deeply implicated poetry and sentiment are in the play of power and the maintenance of social hierarchy. What begins as a puzzle about a single poetic genre becomes a reflection on the politics of sentiment and the complexity of culture. This thirtieth anniversary edition includes a new afterword that reflects on developments both in anthropology and in the lives of this community of Awlad 'Ali Bedouins, who find themselves increasingly enmeshed in national political and social formations. The afterword ends with a personal meditation on the meaning—for all involved—of the radical experience of anthropological fieldwork and the responsibilities it entails for ethnographers.

The Bedouin in the Negev region have undergone a remarkable change of life style in the course of the 20th century: within a few generations they changed from being nomads to an almost sedentary and highly educated population. The author, who is a Bedouin himself and has worked in the Israeli Ministry of Education and Culture as Superintendent of the Bedouin Educational Schools in the Negev for many years, offers the first in-depth study of the development of Bedouin society, using the educational system as his focus.

This study offers a thorough analysis of the bedouin dialects of the northern Sinai littoral. Proposing 82 criteria and introducing 'partial isoglosses' to typologically measure dialects, the author shows that three of five dialect groups identified form a linguistic continuum.
