This comprehensive monograph is a second edition of one of the most popular Poyser monographs; it covers all aspects of this spectacular eagle's biology and ecology, including a full review of the literature and incorporating the considerable body of research on the species since the publication of the first edition in 1997. The late Jeff Watson was one of Scotland's foremost eagle experts, with more than 20 years of research on the birds; following Jeff's untimely death, the book is being completed by his colleagues Des Thompson and Helen Riley. Scottish studies provide the foundation for a treatment that also includes up-to-date information from work in North America, continental Europe and elsewhere. This global view allows fascinating insights into the species' relationships with a variety of different habitats and leads to many new and important conclusions regarding its ecology. This highly readable and authoritative account is destined to become the standard reference on the species, both in Scotland and elsewhere in the world. The text is enriched with many superb pictures of this majestic bird and additional wash landscapes capture the very special atmosphere of Scotland's Golden Eagle country.

This limited edition book is limited to 50 signed and numbered copies and includes leather binding and slipcase. The spine has five horizontal ridges beneath the leather, used to simulate the bundles of thread that in medieval times were used to sew signatures together, a hand-painted eagle feather on the spine, the slip-case bound in bonded leather, an original watercolour painting of an eagle's head that accompanies each copy (and is removable for framing), the pages are gilt-edged, and an eagle in flight medallion of fine pewter plated with copper, then nickel, then gold, is embossed into the leather cover of the book. The medallion was sculpted by the noted artist, Mark Rossi, especially for the book. Because of the painted feather and the painted eagle head (both by Dr Ellis), each numbered copy will be unique. With over 400 images by 21 photographers and 15 artists, and over 100 accounts by 48 authors representing 20 nations, this book will appeal to both the generalist and the academic. Focusing on teaching everyone to value the eagle and the vast open habitats it needs to survive, and the creatures that share its world, this unique work both celebrates the eagle and attunes readers to the challenges facing this species in the modern world. Along with legendary stories from antiquity are chapters on trained eagles hunting large quarry such as gazelle, deer, foxes, wolves, and even man; eagle research and intelligence; and the eagle in the legend and lore of native peoples worldwide, including the acts by North American First Nations people to obtain coup feathers. An additional chapter outlines ways and means of capturing eagles, including the use of helicopters. The book concludes with chapters on three special trained eagles.

Since my earliest days of bird watching the golden eagle has been my favourite, because of its size and nobility of appearance and, perhaps even more, because of its unrivalled powers of flight. "Lethargic" and "ignoble" are terms which have been applied to the golden eagle, but the men who used them showed that they had only superficial knowledge of this fine bird, the very spirit of the hills and high corries of the Highlands of Scotland. The eagle is a complete individualist: that is one reason why it appeals to me, and why I enjoy watching it.

Seton Gordon was among the first to observe in some detail - through countless hours in his hide - the daily life of this magnificent bird and to present in his books an account of their habitat, diet and behaviour. But his writing was much more that - his books are interwoven with acute observation and his narrative possesses a clarity that ensures the reader sees as much as Seton Gordon himself saw. From day-to-day life on the eyrie, through the different Scottish landscapes and the interaction of the eagles with other wildlife - it is all covered.

The Golden Eagle is thought to be well-known and well-documented However, much of the available literature is not necessarily in a form that can readily be used in the field. The Fieldworker's Guide questions the reliability of existing knowledge and promotes better understanding of the species through improved fieldwork. With 37 years of active, year-round investigative fieldwork experience of the Golden Eagle, the author has vast knowledge enabling him to shed light on these matters.
