The world is going to end when the dancing stops at Mrs. Quarterhorse's masked ball. Mrs. Quarterhorse at the Masked Ball is the innocuous title I've chosen for my second book of experiences with the lady who I know only as Mrs. Quarterhorse. I considered a more dramatic title for the story, Mrs Quarterhorse at the End of the World. But I rejected this title because even though the masked ball is going to end with our destruction by asteroid, this isn't an apocalyptic story. My intention is for this story to be small, personal, and optimistic. I haven't yet met any of the ball guests. They are from Mrs. Quarterhorse's wealthier circles, people from a world far beyond my own. I have been warned by Mrs. Quarterhorse that the guests are an unpleasant bunch, and so I am looking forward to meeting them as much as I am looking forward to meeting the asteroid that will arrive ten hours after them, at about four in the morning. I wonder if at that time the party will head out onto the snowy lawn expecting to watch the asteroid soar across the dark sky? The asteroid that the guests - and most of the rest of the world - believe is going to crash harmlessly in the ocean on the other side of the planet. Mrs. Quarterhorse and I know otherwise. I am a reluctant card-reader, and foreseeing the end of the world was the last in a long list of premonitions I could have done without. The asteroid is going to squash us, bury us, or blow us out to sea. One way or another we are going to be obliterated. The theme of Mrs. Quarterhorse's ball is, unironically, The End of the World. She and I are the only ones who know this. She didn't put it on the invitations. As the party will take place over Christmas and the house will be appropriately decorated, the guests will no doubt assume the Holiday is the reason for the ball. As for why we will all be wearing animal masks, I have no idea. Mrs. Quarterhorse indulges all of her whims, sensible and otherwise. But I'm glad we'll be wearing masks as it will make it easier for me to blend in among the patricians for whom I will be reading cards. It was either read cards or waltz, and I would rather not spend my last hours humiliated before Mrs. Quarterhorse's better-heeled acquaintances. No harm can come from my reading cards now that there is no future left for me to be incorrect about. If anyone asks me for their fortune, I intend to lie. I'm not going to ruin the party by telling everyone they're going to die at four in the morning. Mrs. Quarterhorse put a lot of work into this ball. I have no idea why. From the way she talks to me about her other guests, it doesn't seem to me that she cares very much for them. I hope that she feels at least a little something for me. Perhaps she is more sentimental than she appears, perhaps she wants a full house so that she doesn't have to die alone. But to be clear, this is not a bleak story, or a sardonic story, it is a happy one. It is not about asteroids, or apocalypses, or joyless elites, or even about masked balls. It is, simply, a story of a lost animal searching for home. This is the second book in the Mrs. Quarterhorse series.
